2009 Chevrolet Camaro

It has been announced by GM CEO Rick Wagoner that Chevrolet will bring back the iconic muscle car the Camaro in 2009.

I hope that the car will be similar to the spectacular concept vehicle I viewed at the LA auto show earlier this year. Initial production will begin at the end of 2008, and retail sales will start in the first quarter of 2009.

I am guessing that the car will be powered by a 5.7 V8 similar to that of the standard Corvette available now. Hopefully Chevrolet make use of the 505hp V8 from the Corvette ZO6 in the Camaro possibly as the SS model.... This Camaro is very good looking, and with the right technology and power to weight ratio it will sell very well.

Chevrolet stopped producing the fast and sleek car in the 2002 model year after a run that began in 1967.

Built on the Aussie VE platform no less, along with where Ford seem to be going, it looks like Australia are getting a deserved god reputation for Big 4 door car platform technology.

Nice car with character. It would probably be a tad claustrophobic and difficult to see out of due to the size of the windows. But what GM and Ford US need to do is improve on their reliability, that's what gave bland Japanese cars a very strong foothold on the US market. I have no doubt that US designers do have the talent when unleashed by the bean counters, but a great-looking car is no good if it cannot be depended on. If it's between the heart and the mind, there is only so much hurt a heart could take.

Chevrolet seems to have perfected the small block V8 engine Tony. In fact I'd go as far as saying that GM is one of the most reliable and dependable of the US manufacturers.

It will be better equipped than the Mustang and will have a better chassis. It will sell.

It’ll be hard to sell this outside the US, where Chevrolet means Daewoo in most of Europe—they couldn’t even sell the Corvette there as a Chevy.

They have sold a few Corvettes in UK?

True, Rob, but what I am getting at is where do you put the Camaro? Remember, the Corvette is not (officially) a Chevrolet in the UK. The Camaro probably can’t be a Chevrolet in Europe or the UK, and it would be foolish to start another model-turned-make for it. Unless they put Vauxhall badges on it …

Well everyone knows that the Vette and the Camaro is manufactured by Chevrolet... To call them Vauxhall would be somewhat nasty. All I can think of is a 74 Vauxhall Viva, and that is not a good comparison for a Corvette or a Camaro.

Well, you and I and a lot of people know, but there’s still no room for them as Chevrolets in Europe, according to GM’s warped strategy.
Camaro and Corvette do not sit well in the same showroom as the European Chevrolets, the idea being that they are not as representative of the brand’s values as the Daewoo Lacetti. Go figure.
