2007 Audi S8

The new Audi S8 is due to be released soon, and the beauty will be equipped with a new V10 engine that capitalises on the expertise of the super sports car Lamborghini Gallardo. The 10-cylinder power unit develops 450 bhp of power and 540 Nm of torque from a swept volume of 5.2 litres. The torque value is achieved at as low an engine speed as 3,500 rpm. As on the Le Mans winning R8, the most successful racing car in the world, FSI petrol direct injection assures superior power output in the Audi S8. This luxury saloon sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds, and is electronically governed at 250 km/h. Without the governor it would probably cruize along the autobahn at close to 300kph.

This is a bloody good looking car, and although it should be faster to 100km/h with all that horsepower, it is a car that is certainly worth considering if you are looking for a 760 or a S 600.

Hmm. I imagine the RS8 that is sitting on the drawing boards will probably have the extra power you are thinking about.

Nice. Modern as it is, it's still got that touch of smart conservativeness, not too daring. A bit like an Armani suit. My benchmark for a large luxury-executive car -- would you look important yet knowledgeable enough being driven in it with diplomatic license plates in Amsterdam or Montecarlo? Yeah, this'll do.

Yes the RS8 will probably be a 600hp whopper. Yes Tony would be a nice diplomatic car.

Funny you should say that. The Audi A8 back in 1998 was the govt car of choice for the Moscow "Nomenklatura" (named ones - or those who were special enough in govt) for winter driving around Moscow. In summertime, they all had black S-Class Mercs.

I can't imagine the dutch appreciating a car like this. Far better for a diplomat to show up on a bicycle.

For the eurotrash down in Monaco its not nearly ostentatious enough.

For a german stockbroker it looks like the ideal way to get to meetings on time.

I guess you'd have the Bently Continental for Monaco?

Well it is an A8 with a sports package on the body, nicer wheels, and a gruntier engine.
